Often the infection is just in one toe nail, but several toes may be affected. At first the infection is usually painless.
The nail may look thickened and discoloured (often a greeny-yellow colour). Commonly,
this is all that occurs and it often causes no other symptoms. However, it can look unsightly.
Sometimes the infection becomes worse. White or yellow patches may appear where the nail has come away from the skin under the nail (the nailbed).
Sometimes the whole nail comes away. The nail may become soft and crumble. Bits of nail may fall off.
The skin next to the nail may be inflamed or scaly. If left untreated, the infection may eventually destroy the nail and the nailbed,
and may become painful. Walking may become uncomfortable if a toenail is affected.
We have different options that can treat this condition: local or tablets.
However before starting any treatment we must be sure that the suspicious nail appearence is not something other than an onychomycosis.
Therefore we always highly recommend to do a biopsy.
We only work with the best laboratory in London (TDL : The Doctor Laboratory)
There are a few steps to the biopsy test :
- Samples are collected by cutting part of the nail and debris if possible.
- Samples are then sent within hours to the laboratory by special courier.
- Within days we get a first result (microscopic results)
- After 3 to 4 weeks the culture of the funigi are received.
- As soon as the results arrive you are contacted to arrange an appointment to discuss the next step.
