About dry Needling...
Dry needling is an innovative and highly effective treatment for Verrucaes which just will not go away.
Common verrucae treatments, such as Cryotherapy (freezing), or chemical caustics work by creating a thermal or chemical burn in and around the verrucae.
This aims to resolve the verrucae by creating inflammation and swelling around the area, thereby provoking an immune system response.
Dry needling is different. By disrupting each individual papilla in the verrucae and creating a portal from the viral tissue to the adipose tissue,
it allows the immune system to attack the lesion directly.
In this way treating single verrucae can cause spontaneous remission in some or all satellite Verrucaes.
It has been reported to be highly effective, even for longstanding lesions of ten years or more and has been successful when other treatments have failed.
Dry needling only requires one, very occasionally two.
It is carried out under local anaesthetic and most people report only minor soreness for a few days,
similar to a bruise.
Dry Needling has been around for 40 years.
It was first described in a medical journal in America in 1969 and very few Podiatrists in the U.K. offer this high standard procedure
Our insurance.
We would like to assure you that the techniques we use, using local anaesthetic,
make the procedure as painless as possible.
The body of clinical evidence is supporting the effectiveness of this treatment
it has been tested and found suitable for both adults and children.
How will the procedure will be carried out.
There are three stages to the operation:
- You will be given an injection of local anaesthetic which will make the area of the verrucae numb.
- Once it is numb, the podiatrist will needle the verrucae to implant the virus into the dermal layer
of the skin so that the body’s immune system can come into contact with the virus.
- A dressing will then be applied to the lesion and you will be able to walk normally,
although you are advised not to drive whilst the foot is numb.
Discomfort post treatement.
Some patients may experience slight discomfort after the anaesthetic has worn off,
like a bruise for a few days. If this occurs, routine doses of your usual painkiller are normally sufficient to reduce the discomfort.
It is advisable to bring comfortable footwear with you on the day of the procedure and to wear as much comfortable footwear for the following days and activities such as running or high impacts should be done as less as possible.
Follow up.
You will have to attend the clinic 6 weeks after the procedure to be re assessed.
No specific dressings are recommended, but usual dressings can be applied to give comfort for the first few days.
Availability.
This treatment is available to most patients who have Verrucaes,
subject to an assessment in order to ensure that there are no medical
or surgical reasons why such a procedure should not be carried out.
