Knowledge about verrucae: understanding the probeme.

A Verruca or wart is a viral infection of the skin on the foot due to HPV virus.
Verrucae can vary in appearance and may occur as single or multiple lesions.
The virus causes an increase in cell replication in the skin and a lump may appear on the skin.
If the verrucae is positioned on the sole of the foot then it may become painful due to the build up of callus.

In adults a Verruca can stay for a very long time and treatment will be indicated to help resolve the viral infection.

Cryotherapy is one of the treatments available to treat a Verruca.
Cryotherapy is a controlled destruction of the tissues using very low temperatures i.e. freezing of the skin.
Ice is formed inside and outside the cells disrupting the cell where the virus is living.
The target is to freeze as quickly as possible so that the cells have no time to defend themselves.
Ideally the treatment ruptures the cells and releases the virus into the blood stream.
The body’s immune system is then thought to fight off the skin infection.

The procedure for cryotherapy is:

  • Skin preparation :removing all calluses, dead skin.
  • Freezing: applying the freezing liquid, then wait and re apply the liquid (average of 6 application per sessions.)
  • Dressing (the area is then covered with a plaster and foam to make it as comfortable as possible.
  • A follow-up appointment is required after 2 weeks for re assessment to see if further treatment is needed.

Post Procedure care :

A blister usually develops 24 – 48 hours after the initial freezing treatment.
If there is too much discomfort you are advised to take an over the counter pain killer.
The lesion may also bleed under the skin so forming a blood blister.
This may look alarming but ideally the skin needs to blister to help eradicate the Verruca.

If you are experiencing any concern before the time of your next appointment,
you can call us and we will arrange a complimentary follow up in order to assess the blister.
There is no charge in between cryotherapy session to be assessed for blister concerns.

Some Verrucae are very resistant and may require several freezing sessions,
so please do not hesitate to come back before your next scheduled appointment if you feel you need to.
Alternatively do not hesitate to contact me over the phone or via email.

There is no golden rule about verrucae, the treatment can take only 1 session or be persistant over time. We generaly do an average of 3 to 5 sessions.
